Os chamados “botocudos’” eram considerados muito aguerridos, defendiam sua terra com determinação, e sofreram perseguição desde o século XVI, até ao início do século XX. Botocudos foi uma denominação genérica dada pelos colonizadores portugueses a diferentes grupos indígenas pertencentes ao tronco macro-jê (grupo não tupi), de diversas filiações linguísticas e regiões geográficas, cujos indivíduos, em sua maioria, usavam botoques labiais e auriculares. Grandes corredores e guerreiros temíveis, foram os responsáveis pelo fracasso das capitanias de Ilhéus, Porto Seguro e Espírito Santo. Sempre foram vizinhos temidos. Antes do descobrimento do Brasil, haviam desalojado os tupiniquins de suas terras ao Sul da Bahia.

The so-called “botocudos” were considered very fierce, they defended their land with determination, and suffered persecution from the 16th century until the beginning of the 20th century. Botocudos was a generic name given by Portuguese colonizers to different indigenous groups belonging to the Macro-Jê trunk (non-Tupi group), of different linguistic affiliations and geographic regions, whose individuals, for the most part, wore lip and ear botoques. Great runners and fearsome warriors, they were responsible for the failure of the captaincies of Ilhéus, Porto Seguro and Espírito Santo. They were always feared neighbors. Before the discovery of Brazil, they had displaced the Tupiniquins from their lands in the south of Bahia.
